What Is gRPC?

What Is gRPC?

we specialize in modern software solutions that scale. One of the technologies we often use is gRPC a fast, open-source framework designed to enable high-performance communication between distributed systems. But how does it stack up against REST APIs? And more importantly, when should you choose gRPC?

What Is gRPC?

gRPC stands for Google Remote Procedure Call. Developed by Google in 2016, it’s an open-source protocol that allows services to communicate across different environments almost like making a local function call, but between systems.

gRPC uses Protocol Buffers (Protobuf), a binary serialization format that's significantly faster and more efficient than JSON. It also leverages HTTP/2, which enables faster, multiplexed communication.

This makes gRPC an excellent fit for microservices architectures, Golang backends, cloud services like AWS, and platforms like Kong and FastAPI that require efficient inter-service communication.

Word of Advice: Choose gRPC for internal microservices, mobile apps, and high-performance systems. Choose REST for public-facing APIs or browser-based clients that need broad compatibility.

Key Benefits of gRPC

 Developer Productivity

gRPC uses .proto files to define APIs. It automatically generates client and server code in multiple languages like:

  • Golang gRPC

  • gRPC Java

  • gRPC Node.js

  • gRPC C#

This enables seamless cross-language communication especially helpful in polyglot environments or when working with platforms like MuleSoft or AWS Lambda.

 High Performance

gRPC is built for speed and efficiency:

  • Binary encoding via Protobuf = smaller payloads

  • HTTP/2 enables multiplexing, reducing latency

  • Built-in streaming capabilities for real-time data

Ideal for cloud-native applications, IoT, and real-time systems.

How gRPC Works

Imagine your Order Service (client) wants to confirm a payment with your Payment Service (server):

  1. The Order Service calls a method (e.g., ConfirmPayment()).

  2. gRPC encodes this into a Protobuf message.

  3. The message travels via HTTP/2 to the server.

  4. The Payment Service processes the message and returns a result.

  5. The client uses the result to continue its workflow.

This process is fast, efficient, and transparent to the developer.

Can You Use gRPC in Web Applications?

While native gRPC isn’t fully supported in most browsers, gRPC-Web acts as a bridge, enabling web apps to talk to gRPC services via a proxy.

However, gRPC-Web does not support all features (like bidirectional streaming). So, for web applications, REST or GraphQL may still be better suited unless you specifically set up gRPC-Web with a reverse proxy like Envoy or Kong Gateway.

When Should You Use gRPC?

Choose gRPC if you:

  • Are building microservices in a cloud or on-prem environment (e.g., AWS gRPC, Kong gRPC)

  • Need fast, lightweight communication in mobile apps

  • Want to save bandwidth and reduce latency

  • Work in a multi-language environment (e.g., gRPC Golang + gRPC Node + gRPC Java)

Avoid gRPC if you:

  • Need full browser compatibility without proxies

  • Want simple public-facing APIs with broad adoption

Final Thoughts

gRPC is a game-changer for modern systems that need speed, scalability, and flexibility. Whether you're using Golang, AWS, FastAPI, or building mobile-first platforms, gRPC can streamline communication and boost performance.
